Psalm 99

Praise to the LORD for His Fidelity to Israel.

1 The LORD reigns, let the peoples tremble;
He is enthroned above the cherubim, let the earth shake!
2 The LORD is great in Zion,
And He is exalted above all the peoples.
3 Let them praise Your great and awesome name;
Holy is He.
4 The strength of the King loves justice;
You have established equity;
You have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.
5 Exalt the LORD our God
And worship at His footstool;
Holy is He.
6 Moses and Aaron were among His priests,
And Samuel was among those who called on His name;
They called upon the LORD and He answered them.
7 He spoke to them in the pillar of cloud;
They kept His testimonies
And the statute that He gave them.
8 O LORD our God, You answered them;
You were a forgiving God to them,
And yet an avenger of their evil deeds.
9 Exalt the LORD our God
And worship at His holy hill,
For holy is the LORD our God.

God is so unlike us.  In fact, He is utterly un-us.  We are merely creation, fallible, and sinful.  We stumble and grope through this life, wandering and searching for something more.  Too often we end up worshiping (exalting) something so un-worthy (ourselves, our money, our jobs, etc).

God is solely worthy of our worship. Why? First, He is sovereign.  He reigns.  All creation sits at His feet.  Second, He is Holy, wholly other, cut-off, sanctified. As a result, He is perfect in justice, righteousness, love, equity, and in every other characteristic people long for. Third, He is gracious.  He forgives in spite of our “evil deeds.” When He has every right to exact revenge upon us, and to seek justice, He instead has provided grace to those who know (place the entirety of their faith in) and love him.

The call is for us to live Holy lives, worshipping Him in every aspect of our lives. We are to rejoice when the world cuts us off and we are to wait upon Him to avenge their evil deeds. We are called to a life of keeping His testimonies.  If you know Him, you are part of a Holy Priesthood, but you are still a fallible sinner.  Come to His footstool and be refreshed. Come and worship.
